Qur'an, a guidance for mankind
Asslam o Alaikum wr wb
The month of ramadan in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong). So whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of ramadan i.e. is present at his home), he must observe Saum (fasts) that month, and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days which one did not observe Saum (fasts) must be made up] from other days. Allah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you. (He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must magnify Allah [i.e. to say Takbir (Allahu Akbar; Allah is the Most Great] for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Him. (Al-Baqara, Chapter #2, Verse #185)
May it be a blessed month 4 all ..

On Tuesday, a young New Jersey mother named Catherine Ferreira was savagely attacked in a McDonald’s.

Ferreira suffered a broken nose, two black eyes and a mild concussion.
Latia Harris, 25, was captured on video throwing the petite woman to the ground like a rag doll and repeatedly punching her in the face.Written By : Ashley Herzog
The video of the brutal beating has gone viral and sparked a widespread outrage, since none of the bystanders seen in the footage came to Ferreira’s aid as she was being brutalized by the much larger woman; instead, they looked on with their cell phone cameras trained on the brawl.

On Tuesday, a young New Jersey mother named Catherine Ferreira was savagely attacked in a McDonald’s. Now she’s publicly wondering why no one tried to help her, and why bystanders whipped out cell phones and started filming instead.
Apparently, the only real man in the room was Ferreira’s 2-year-old son, who threw himself on Harris. The only good to come out of the videos was that they helped identify the attacker.

Fruits and vegetables important for health but don’t lead to weight loss: study
Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham have found that increasing fruit and vegetable intake does not lead to weight loss, despite decades-old popular belief.
A team of investigators performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of data of more than 1,200 subjects in seven randomized, controlled trials to explore the weight loss effects of increasing fruit and vegetable consumption.
"Across the board, all studies we reviewed showed a near-zero effect on weight loss," says study leader Kathryn Kaiser, Ph.D., instructor in the UAB School of Public Health. "So I don't think eating more alone is necessarily an effective approach for weight loss because just adding them on top of whatever foods a person may be eating is not likely to cause weight change."
According to the United States Department of Agriculture's MyPlate initiative, the recommended daily serving amount for adults is 1.5-2 cups of fruit and 2-3 cups of vegetables, although dieters are often advised to "fill up" on fruits and vegetables based on the assumption that the low-calorie foods will satiate by taking up space in the digestive tract.
"In the overall context of a healthy diet, energy reduction is the way to help lose weight, so to reduce weight you have to reduce caloric intake," Kaiser said. "People make the assumption that higher-fiber foods like fruits and vegetables will displace the less healthy foods, and that's a mechanism to lose weight; but our findings from the best available evidence show that effect doesn't seem to be present among people simply instructed to increase fruit and vegetable intake."
Fruits and vegetables provide many vitamins and fiber, so even if they don't promote weight loss, it seems unlikely they could do harm unless consumed in extreme quantities.
A study comparing the popular Mediterranean diet to a reduced-fat diet says that while the former may not promote weight loss, it significantly reduces risk of type 2 diabetes, significantly more than the latter.
Another study, published last year in the New England Journal of Medicine, worked with patients at risk for cardiac disease, concluding that followers of the Mediterranean diet were 30 percent less likely to experience heart attack or stroke than those on a low-fat diet.
Possibly, though, the attention given to fruits and vegetables casts a shadow over other important dietary foods.
For example, a study published in the International Journal of Obesity found that eating two eggs for breakfast can lead to weight loss, which some might find surprising because eggs are sometimes associated with weight gain.
Kaiser's study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Daughter of South Korea ferry crewman kills herself

A representative of students who survived the April 16 ferry disaster cries while reading a letter a …
SEOUL (Reuters) - The daughter of a crew member of a South Korean ferry which sank killing hundreds of school children committed suicide on Thursday, police and prosecutors said, in a tragic twist to a disaster that prompted a nationwide outpouring of grief.
The crew member, facing a charge of negligence in the April 16 sinking, was granted temporary release from detention so that he could help arrange the funeral, a prosecution official said.
The 15 surviving crew of the ferry are on trial on charges ranging from negligence to homicide amid a public furor after video footage showed some escaping the sinking vessel as the children followed instructions and stayed on board.
The daughter had been preparing for years for a government exam, said a police officer in the southern city of Busan, where she was found dead.
"To become a public servant was my last hope, but I don't think that is my way. Thank you for supporting me and I am sorry," she said in a note left for her husband, the police officer said.
The Sewol, overloaded and traveling too fast on a turn, sank off the southwest coast on April 16 on a routine journey from Incheon on the mainland to the southern holiday island of Jeju.
Of the 476 passengers and crew on board, 339 were children and teachers from the same school on the outskirts of Seoul. Only 172 people were rescued and the remainder are all presumed to have drowned.

Ex-football player fears future with brain damage
Ex-football player fears future with brain damage
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former NFL tight end Ben Utecht told a
Senate hearing Wednesday that he fears where his history of brain
injuries will leave him in the future.
Utecht said he started experiencing memory loss at
age 29, after a football career in which he sustained five documented
concussions and innumerable dings to the head.
''It took losing my mind to care about my mind,'' said Utecht, 32.
His
testimony came as brain injuries in sports, particularly contact sports
like football, remain a concern for players and families. More evidence
suggests a link between head injuries and neurodegenerative diseases
including Alzheimer's and chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE.
On
Wednesday, the NFL agreed to remove a $675 million cap on damages from
thousands of concussion-related claims. More than 4,500 former players
have filed suit against the league.
Utecht, who was a member of
the Indianapolis Colts' championship team in 2007, said his final
concussion, suffered while playing for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2009,
required eight months of rehabilitation and forced his retirement from
the NFL after a six-year career.
In addition to memory loss,
Utecht said the brain damage he has suffered has changed his behavior to
the extent that his 5-year-old daughter is scared of him sometimes.
''As
a father, it puts the idea of traumatic brain injury on a whole
different level,'' Utecht said, choking up as he talked about his
daughter.
The Senate Special Committee on Aging asked a
four-person panel of witnesses what Congress could do to help improve
the prospects for those at risk for neurodegenerative diseases.
''Money,
money, money,'' said Robert Stern, professor of neurology,
neurosurgery, and anatomy and neurobiology at Boston University School
of Medicine. ''That's what it comes down to.''
Stern said that
studying diseases like CTE could not only benefit people suffering from
that disease, it could help researchers learn more about similar
neurodegenerative diseases, ultimately helping more people.
Stern
said that hits to the head that do nearly the same damage without
displaying the symptoms of a concussion are relatively under-studied and
possibly more dangerous than concussions, which he called ''just the
tip of the iceberg.''
''I fear that we have a major public health threat looming,'' Stern said.
Each
panelist said he would not allow his child to participate in contact
sports before high school, at the earliest, because of the risk of brain
injuries.
